Summer Reading Resources

What is the "Summer Slide"?

The Summer Slide occurs when the skills gained during the school year melt away with the summer heat. The Summer Slide = Brain Drain. The summer learning loss happens with all subjects, but reading and math are often the biggest cause for concern. The Summer Slide can cause students to return to school in the fall at a month behind, on average, where they were in the Spring.  The summer learning loss translates into teachers spending a least a month re-teaching materials students have forgotten over the summer. Studies have shown how reading achievement for many children can decline up to 3 months during the summer, resulting in a 2 year gap by the end of 5th grade.

How to Prevent the Summer Slide

Make sure your child attends the Bruce-Guadalupe Summer Session! The extra 4 1/2 hours of instruction a day, four days a week for 5 weeks, will make a big difference in avoiding the Summer Slide!

Have your child read everyday! Reading everyday is the best way to avoid the Summer Slide! Read to your child, have your child read to you, and have children read independently. Older children still love being read to by adults!

Visit the Milwaukee Public Library!  The books are free and the library offers many FREE summer programs for the whole family!

Have questions?  Feel free to talk with your child's teacher or Ms. Klug, the BG Library Media Specialist.

Have a great slide-free summer!
